review

Twilight of the Gods is a gloriously complex story of grief, revenge, love, and fate. Snyder and Oliva's gripping reimagining of Norse mythology captivates with its vivid portrayal of epic battles, storytelling, and dynamic characters.

If you like the unbridled brutality and barbaric hedonism of epic pagan tales rendered in animation, you’re in for a treat.

Over time many have seen the Aesir as being of good merit and Jötun as creatures of dire evil, but the method by which the story starts with a (mostly) mortal woman wronged and bloodied does an excellent job showing that there is no such thing as a trustworthy god.

The main character is a revitalization of Red Sonya and The Vengeful Bride archetypes, accompanied by a group of epic heroes gathered along the way that have their own unique positions tangential to Norse mythology via blood, magic, story, marriage, curses, and more. Traveling the lands, acquiring the tools needed to seek revenge, they face foe and gain ally alike on their march to the Bifröst. The D&D/Pathfinder/TTRPG fans will delight.

The animation style is excellent, blending elements of both Western and Anime styles with incredible lighting effects and vibrant contrast that creates a unique template across all the factions at play.

There is battle, there is lust, there is treachery as old as time and a particularly interesting twist that some with strong opinions on “borrowed” mythology might find humorous or infuriating.

The one thing I must say is that it ends far too soon. The cliffhanger is obnoxious and there was definitely intent behind leaving the viewer frustrated with its conclusion; one or two more episodes could have given this limited series a satisfying conclusion, but I fear that it was left hanging for hoped of a second season… at which point it feels like there’s not enough left in the story to stretch 8 episodes.

I’m not a Snyder fan by any stretch of the imagine, JL and Rebel Moon were terrible, but he came VERY close to orchestrating a strong story beginning to end here, but it feels like it ended on a disappointing note that may or may not be redeemed. It was still a fun journey, and the lore and characters alone are worth the watch.
